The UW here in Seattle uses MF ferrets, but only until they are 6 months
old.  At that time they are allowed to be "adopted" by their employees or
they are euthanized.  They are 'interchangable', lab animals one moment and
someone's cherished pet the next (if they are allowed to live that is).
