Constantly scratching bottom of cage

My ferret tho, not all the time, scratches the bottom of his cage, as if he
was running.  He will keep doing it no matter how much you tell him to stop
etc..  It's always the same spot too, most of the time.  Any reason why
they do this?  He gets his food, he gets exercise, yet he keeps us awake at
night.
 
Any suggestions are appreciated
