I think The Ferret Store's intentions are admirable and agree that
their influence is much better spent spreading education and trying to
influence positive change. Some people seem way too eager to read bad
intent into everything. As stated in their Official Statement " as the
largest purchaser of ferret products in the United States, we will use
that leverage to work with the manufacturers to encourage them to develop
healthy food and treats and also urge them to look at their current
product offerings and review them for safety and nutritional value." I
think this is great news. We have a major player in the ferret industry
willing to lend their influence to our cause.

I think we all agree that the best thing would be for all of the
unhealthy products to just vanish overnight, but we know that won't
happen and any major retailer offering to help educate the owners and
influence the manufacturers is a step in the right direction. Do I like
to see these products for sale on their site? Of course not but, I don't
use any of these products and spend a fair amount of time trying to
educate other ferret folks about the dangers of these products.

I am less concerned with the treats since you shouldn't be giving them as
a supplement to the diet but as a treat once or twice a day tops. I am
however very concerned about the products such as the Kaytee that promote
themselves as diets or healthy supplements. The answer to that is to get
the manufacturers to change or eliminate those products. The Ferret
Store carries more influence in that realm than dozens of unhappy ferret
owners that don't even use the product to begin with.

Instead of spitting in the face of someone offering us a hand with our
fight, lets pull our own weight and offer to help with their educational
efforts.
