Hi all,
 
I've found that elderly ferrets don't like to be caged for long periods of
time.  I used to let my late Slinky, at age 6.5 out during the day, and
when I had to go out, I put him in the bathroom with a blockade.  As he
got older and slept more, I let him have complete freedom during the day,
as he slept most of the time and no longer climbed.  I continued to cage
him during the night until his death.  I work out of my home, so it was
easy for me, but you could leave the ferret in a ferret-proof room while at
work.  Slinky used to just get up to eat and use the litter box, play with
his toy mice and then go back to sleep.
