Hello --

Yesterday I suddenly heard a demanding minibanging on the gate to the
kitchen -- esigned to keep ferrets and kittens in and to keep dogs out.
Well, it was little naked-tailed Ad, my albino fert with muddy dirty
feet, utterly happy and excited.

She and two of her old buddies, Rico and Robert had escaped. From what
I could gather, she'd scooted out one dog door, had a good evening, and
come back through a different dog door when she wanted to go back to
her comfy life.

I know this is utterly against most of what I have read, but my ferts
always come back home (if I don't catch them first) when they escape. A
few years ago I read about someone here on the forum who let her ferts
run loose and they came and went in and out with the dogs. Also someie
told me about a vet who had ferts that did the same. For both sets of
ferts, that was a normal situation their people allowed them ferts to
do this, and there were no bad cnnsequenses.

Has anyone else had this experience? Heard of people who do it
successfully?

I'm not willing to try that here, but in Ethiopia we will have a fence
that will keep cats and ferts in the yard, and I shall try givng them
at least reqular bouts of fuller freedom. We'll have a "moat" with two
gates at our entrance so there wil be control against mad breaks for
the street by any of the pets.
