My vet has had several cases where very squirmy ferrets have had the
implant pop back out. Sometimes it is safe to re-use, but if it hits
the floor, it's wasted.

So, she uses very light sedation (not enough to put them under, but
enough that they're very relaxed).

If the sedation is done carefully, with appropriate monitoring, there
is very little risk.
