I often hear folks refer to the ferret as the 3rd most popular pet.
How has this been determined?

A search comes up with what appears to me to be *opinions* 
Some list fish, birds as #3. Others list *small animal* as #3.

Is there any actual documentation, or is it just a *best guess*.
