For the safety of your ferret I would either keep her caged or purchase a
playpen and set it up. We have several old ferrets, 2 are 6, 1 is 5. My
old ferrets are as prone to mischief as the younger ones. With many more
years experience they can wreak greater havoc or get themselves into worse
situations. I've been keeping Buckshot in a playpen in the kitchen where
it is cooler than in the ferret room.

We had to put Alex to sleep a few weeks ago. We've just learned Buckshot
has cancer and only has a little time left. Phoebe has adrendal, but
appears to be healthy enough to survive surgery. Kojack is still going
strong at this time.

Ferret playpens are available through many local breeders, shelters, on
ebay (from said shelters & breeders). I bought one two weeks ago and don't
see how I lived without one. If your girl isn't a climber, get a child/pet
playpen for around $46 at a local dept store. (Mine climb and it doesn't
work for them.)

I add toys, tubes, a bed a litter box, water and food dishes. For more
permanent set ups you can drill holes and attach dishes, water bottles and
even clips for litter boxes.
