I have a slightly different concern regarding rabies and trying to get
quarantine laws than supporting the Morris Aniamal Foundation testing. As I
understand it Imbrab-3 is actually a dog vacinne (correct me if I'm wrong).
My vet told me ferrets currently get an X-tra large dog dose. (I don't
particularly for the fact that my ferrets get the same dose as a Great
Dane!) I believe this is because no pharmaceutical company has developed a
ferret specific vaccine and dose. The rate at which it is said to work is
barely high enough to be considered legally accepted/approved for deterring
rabies and some states (NM? someone just posted) don't really accept it as
"legal".

If, as it seems, some ferrets have shed the racoon rabies strain in the
ongoing test I wonder if getting the bat rabies study done is going to help
us much (especially if ferrets are shown to shed the virus). It seems that
new laws must pass more rigourous muster these days than when quarantine
laws were passed for dogs and cats. I.e. we will need a more efficient,
specific vacine (along with the exact shedding periods) if states are going
to pass quarantine laws.

How can we get a company to come up with a vacine that state health
officials (like the one in Michigan) can't refute? There seems to be the
need for a two prong attack here as it were.

P.S. To the people who just got the Rottie pup - please be very careful.
Letting your ferret hang from its lip may cause it to be scared of the
ferrets and fear aggression could result. Puppies go through specific
stages also when outside influences affect them more than at others.
Please read a good dog behavior book.
