The FAA allows one pet per passenger in an approved carrier (your sherpa
would not be) in the cabin.
 
Sherpa carriers are indeed airline approved.  They are the ONLY airline
approved soft carrier.  You can even call the company to give you
information on this.  The company has made great efforts to enable pet
owners to carry their small pets onboard aircrafts.  The make sure your
ferret does not unzip the top you can saftey pin the zipper pull to the bag
itself.
