Hi,

If you feel better bringing your ferret with you to CA, there are ways
to bypass the border checks (there are 8 entry points from Oregon,
Nevada and Arizona ). Going out there are no checkpoints of course.
Also the main reason for the checkpoints is to look for fruits and
vegetables being brought through, although some agents probably look
more extensively - particularly at out of state visitors that might
have illegal fruit and veggies (Ag pests are what they are worried
about mostly - ferrets are just a side issue). Just to be safe, you
might take the alternative routes which avoid the Agriculture check.
those are listed at
http://www.ferretsanonymous.com/checkpoints/AgStations.pdf

Most have been labelled tested (ie have been driven through). There are
also lists of ferret vets in Ca (online at FA) if you need a vet visit.
I think there are more vets advertised as ferret vets here than in any
other state, and you can contact FA for advice, or just look through
the yellow pages - vets can legally hold ferrets as long as they need
to be held - they have in effect amnesty. No CDFG agents can go to
a vet and ask to see records either. For information and updates on
vets/checkpoint bypasses, go to the Los Angeles/San Gabriel Valley
chapter of Ferrets Anonymous.
