The book by Caleb Carr called "The Angel of Darkness" features a ferret
named Mike who in one part of the book (chapts 21-24), helps to find a
kidnapped child (or at least where she is being kept prisoner) by smell.
The book portrayes Mike as an intellegent, trainable, companionable animal.
