The best "trick" I ever taught my ferret has been to come to the sound of
his treat box shaking (or any box of rice or noodles). Even when he's dead
asleep somewhere and I can't find him, the treat box wakes him and he comes
running. It's gotten him out of some bad situations too as I was learning
to ferret proof. As he would disappear into a crevice between the cupboards
or behind the refridgerator, I would shake the box and out he would come.
And while he is eating (I always give him a treat when he comes---even if he
was doing something bad in the first place), I can remedy the problem.

Azrael does know his name and "no" but chooses to answer to those only when
he isn't too busy. But the treat box never fails.

Hope this trick helps someone else too.
