I was talking to someone who had a dog with a coat like a ferret (thick
undercoat with coaser guard hairs) and they had the same concern about
shaving their animals for the heat.
 
They talked both to a groomer and vet and they both said the same thing.
Animals with undercoats shouldn't be shaved too short.  the undercoat
serves to both keep an animal cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Friend didn't give me specifics as to how this worked.  So, I would advise
against it.
