This past summer, having been graced by Freddy's presence for only 2 months
and not being completely familiar with the abilities of a ferret, I gave our
son, David, the responsibility of keeping an eye on the little guy while my
spouse and I went shopping. When we returned it was apparent that something
had happened while we were gone but David was not forthcoming with an
explanation. It was not until dinner that he slowly unraveled the story.

It seems that David had been remiss in the responsibility which he had been
given and had left the front door open while he tended to something else.
When he discovered that Freddy had quietly departed, he organized a search
party consisting of three friends and the four began scouring the
neighborhood, shouting "Freddy" at the top of their lungs.

Freddy, who was apparently ready to come home at this point, delegated the
task of shouting a response by placing a firm bite on the big toe of the
neighbor's 84 year old grandmother, Mrs. L. who was taking a nap on her
terrace. When the search party arrived in reponse to Mrs. L.'s screaming,
she was in the process of ushering Freddy off the premises with a broom,
exclaiming "What the hell is that varmit?!"

I have since greeted Mrs. L. several times when I am outside with Freddy
and now that she knows he is a harmless, lovable creature, she always stops
to give him a pat.
