I have had a problem with odor mainly because I was giving to many ferrets
free roam 24 hours a day. They were marking several corners, and if I put
paper or litter there they'd then pick different corners. My floors are
hardwood and because they were free at night when I wasn't there to clean
up messes right away, the urine, poopy smell was starting to seep right
into the floor itself. Sooooo, a mild solution of Borax and water + baking
soda to deodorize the floor, blocking all corners but 3, and keeping them
in their cage at night, and out of the bedroom/kitchen completely has done
wonders. I also purchased a 2 lb. bag of an all natural odor removal
rock, Zeolite, which rests on their cage. I change bedding and scrub the
cage weekly, and clean up messes as soon as possible, using an all natural
household cleanser in a spray bottle. I don't give baths and I clean their
ears often, once a month, for I find a lot of their odour is around their
heads, and read somewhere that the wax buildup can exude an odour, plus
cause mites. Last, but not least, I sometimes spritze their backs with
an herbal pet care product (all natural, just water and mild herbs) that
cleans away dust and dander, conditions their coat and skin (pH balanced),
and leaves a pleasant mild smell.
