Kim, we have a rice eater in our house, and the rice pretty much comes out
like it went in, except for being stained yellowish.  The rice that should
be used for a play rice box is very hard, not any type of pre cooked or
semi-cooked rice.  Look for rice in large 20 pound sacks at your grocery
store.
 
Muffet has eaten a few grains of rice from time to time, and never has any
ill effects from doing so.  The grains are still hard when they come out,
they don't look like any digestion break-down has taken place.
