In response to methods used to save carpet:
My first ferret was a relentless carpet digger. The only thing that saved
the carpet was a piece of chimney flashing nailed down over the carpet near
the doorway. This can be purchased in a hardware store. Of course, they
still scratched the flashing, and if you can tolerate the noise, it saves
the carpet. Also not very pretty to look at, but your unprotected carpet
will be in shreds if you don't cover it with something. Hope this helps,
and you can trim the flashing to fit.
