Heartworm in S.Florida

My vet just asked if I wanted to put our 3 ferrets on heartworm medication.
I was surprised as he had never mentioned it before at any of our other
vists; and anyway I thought S.Florida was not an "at risk" area.
 
I was wondering if anyone has thoughts/experience/ knowledge of the
risks/benefits of heartworm and heartworm medication for ferrets living in
the S.Florida area.  We don't have dogs or cats (or other similar pets) in
the household, but the 3 fuzzbutts are always out and about with us.
