I know there's a lot of good people out there, many of whom I'm sure foster
and adopt ferrets from shelters, but I just found out about a programe in
our local women's shelter that's just been initiated. You might not know,
but women's shelters (shelters for women and their children who are victems
of domestic violence) can't take in pets, and for that reason, a lot of
women don't leave their situation, or return due to fear for thier pet's
life or unrest in their children because of the pet being left behind.
Many of these shelters now have temporary foster programmes for pets, to
allow the women time to find somewhere to house them after the situation
becomes less of an emergency.

When reading about the program in the paper, I though a lot of people
here may be interested in it. After all, the shelters probably have a
reasonable amount of people who can take a dog, cat, hamster or fish on
the fly, but ferrets need special care.

If you're interested, ask your local women's shelter. I plan (as soon as
we move out to a place that allows pets in the fall!) to leave my number,
just in case.
