Andrea,
Keep in mind that the sugars in the molasses of ferret lax aren't ideal
for ferrets. and the petrolatum / petroleum jelly has the side effect
of wiping out the gut bacteria too. Have you tried a more natural
approach? like using unspiced canned pumpkin? This fibrous fruit is
indigestible but usually taken up well by ferrets and will push through
their system, clearing hairballs but not upsetting the bacteria too
much and certainly not killing them either. Be sure to use the
non-spiced type.

Other than that, have you tried storing the lax in the fridge?
