To Tim Kesterson: I also had problems with my ferrets and
cat uprooting my plants. There are several ways I solved
this problem. For most of my small-medium size planters,
I used another sturdy pot the same size or bigger and
turned it upside down to use as a stand to place the
pot with the plant on. This placed the plant out of the
ferrets reach and since I used a pot made out of hard
smooth plastic, it was too slick to climb. For my larger
plants I used posterboard to fashion a shield around the
top of the pot, using adhesive tape to hold the posterboard
wrapped around the pot. Then I decorated the outside of the
posterboard with contact paper to make it more attractive.
This makes the outside of the pot too high for the ferret to
jump over and you can still water the plant. There have been
other good ideas on the past ferret lists such as using
decorative rocks on top of the soil so the ferret cannot get
to the dirt. Also using a small mesh wire screen over the
top of the pot. I hope these ideas will help you.
