I've had good luck using mint oil or extract.  Put some on a cottonball
and run it along the baseboards in the room, or any cracks where the ants
may be getting it.  I also put in around the base of the cage.
 
A company called Safer (formerly Victor) makes a mint oil based spray
that's great to use outside around the base of your house.  It's carried
at some home improvement and hardware stores or can be ordered online.
