Mark E. Burgess, DVM, likes animals. And he works with a large variety
of them. Since 1986, when he established the Exotic Animal Practice,
originally based in the Raleigh Hills Veterinary Medical Practices, he
has worked extensively with exotic species. He has been at Southwest
Animal Hospital in Beaverton, OR, where 95% of the caseload is exotic
pets, since 1995.

Licensed to rehabilitate wildlife in Oregon, Dr. Burgess is a charter
member of the Oregon Ferret Association, and also holds memberships in
the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, the American
Veterinary Medical Association, the Oregon Veterinary Medical
Association, and the Portland Veterinary Medical Association. He is a
member of the "Wildlife Integrity Task Force" under the jurisdiction
of the Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, charged with determining which
exotic species should be restricted from importation into Oregon due
to potential risk to native wildlife.

He has spent his professional life in Oregon and continues to educate
vets, vet techs, wildlife rehabilitators, zoo personnel, veterinarians,
biologists, ferret and other exotic pet owners in the care and
treatment of exotic animals. The recipient of grants from the Oregon
Ferret Association and the American Ferret Association, Dr. Burgess
has researched testing for Aleutian Disease Virus (ADV) in ferrets,
including its relationship to lymphoplasmacytic gastroenteritis.

Dr. Burgess has worked with Dr. Mike Garner, who presented at the
Ferret Aid 2006 Symposium in Toronto last year and Dr. Katrina Ramsell,
who will also present at the Portland Symposium, discovering and
describing "Disseminated Idiopathic Myositis in the Ferret." He also
formally introduced Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in ferrets to
the veterinary literature in 2002.

Dr. Burgess will present his work on "Gastrointestinal and Hepatic
Diseases in the Ferret" on Saturday, June 23 at the Portland Symposium.
Come hear him talk on this interesting and informative topic, which he
has also covered in John Lewington's new textbook "Ferret Husbandry,
Medicine & Surgery, 2nd ed." coming soon to a bookstore near you.

If you want to ask him anything, you can write Dr. Burgess at

perhaps you can learn a little about Mark Burgess, the man. I couldn't
get anything out of him but talk about ferrets . . .

It's amazing how much can be accomplished if nobody cares who gets the
credit!
