Hi Fellow Ferret Fans,

I'm a recent addition to the FML and I'm quite honestly, very surprised
about the degree of organization and cohesivenessI have found throughout the
ferret-owning community in this forum. I also applaud the effort of
everyone involved in attempting to curb the misguided legislation that
threatens all ferret owners, even those abroad, for I am sure that U.S.
legislation on this matter will set precedents in other countries as the
ferret's popularity transcends international boundaries.

I am a resident of Buenos Aires, Argentina and plan to acquire a ferret in
the upcoming months, (when a specialty pet-shop owner has informed me that
they will arrive in this country). I fell in love with them during my
university experience in Miami, Florida. However, this is an unknown pet in
Argentina, and there is no industry surrounding it like there is in the
U.S., where it is possible to find specialty foods and veterinarians that
are familiar with the animal.

I would like some information from ferret owners who have lived abroad
(ideally in Buenos Aires) and have had to present the ferret to a vet. What
guidelines should a vet follow in vaccinations? Should the ferret be
treated the same as a cat or small dog as far as the shots go? If quality
cat food is not available, could someone recommend a home-made diet that
would be appropriate? I have read many postings and been to many
ferret-related web sites, but it is difficult to find information that is
non-U.S. related or industry-dependant.

I am also doubtful as to the health and breed quality of the ferrets that
will be sold here, so are there any suggestions as to what I should look for
in choosing a healthy ferret for the first time? If I find the local offer
unsatisfactory and wish to bring one with me from the U.S., does anyone know
what Customs position is on travelling with these fantastic fuzzies?

Any information provided would be most helpful to me!

Warm Regards
Alejandro (Alex) Vitale
