Well, I just got the news on Thor's eye problem. He was looked at by a vet
opthamologist, and the news is that he has a lens luxation (sp?).
Basically, the fibers that hold the lens in place in the eye gave way or
broke down and the lens slid forward and is bumping up against the cornea.
Thus the tearing, swelling, squinting and slight bluish tinge to the eye.

They aren't sure exactly why it happened - could have been trauma (though I
don't know of anything that got his eye at all before this started,
especially not that hard), or it could be congenital.

I was told that the two options are to try and take out the lens or to
remove the eye entirely. If they try and take out the lens, they have to
make an incision into the cornea, and there's the possibility that they
won't be able to suture it up again, or that it won't hold the sutures, in
which case they'd have to remove the eye anyway. And if it were to happen
during surgery, it'd mean that Thor would have to be under anesthesia that
much longer. If they can suture and they give way later (i.e. when he's
back home), he'll lose eye fluid and they'll have to go back and take out
the eye anyway. So I guess we're leaning towards removal of the eye. :^(

He's scheduled for Thursday morning. They want to do something as soon as
possible, because he is hurting. So I need to make a decision pretty
quickly (for which option).

I was told that this is HIGHLY unusual for a ferret - that they've never
seen it before. Has anyone else out there - any vets or shelter operators
or owners - ever heard of or dealt with this????

Please send me mail at my home address, as I am not going to be at work
tomorrow. And please keep Thor in your hearts.

Amy
