hmm, sorry to hear that rumors like that still exist.  I thought that was
just tigers and lions and stuff.  Oh well.  Perhaps a good way to keep that
rumor from spreading to others would have been to explain to the stranger
that he was missinformed about that myth and that in fact ferrets don't
"crave" blood if they ever do draw blood.  You could have explained that
they learn not to bite if taught properly when young and are raised in a
loving home like any other pet.
 
Then he would have walked away a better informed person and not told the
same thing and frightened some new ferret owner somewhere or some little kid
(or kid's parent) playing with a ferret.
