Well I haven't tried the Christmas Tree thing, but I do have some ideas....
yes I am full of it.
 
Idea #1 How about Plexiglas structure around the tree with carpet roll
cardboard around the top.  That would keep the little Ferts out and maybe
even kitty.
 
Idea #2 How about suspending the tree from the ceiling - it wouldn't need
to be that high off the ground, that will definitely keep Ferts and kitties
out.  Hey, don't ask what I've been smokin', it works for construction
workers, well kind of they use a crane.
