Hey all.  I just wanted to respond to the poster who asked about apartments.
I'm not sure where you live, but usually if the apartment allows any pets,
they will allow ferrets.  When I lived in Austin, I had to pay the pet
deposit for one, but not for each pet.  Now that I live in Houston, we told
the apartment management that we had "small, caged animals" to avoid the
$300 deposit on each one and we're just careful to keep them out of rooms
that need maintenance, or that people from the complex might walk into.  And
small caged animals isn't exactly a lie...they are small and we do have a
cage (which they're really only in at night...).  If ferrets aren't illegal,
I would just tell the complex that you have a pet, pay the deposit, and keep
it out of the way if people from the complex need to be in your apartment.
Generally they don't really care unless they get complaints.
 
My little frit, Edie, that I posted about last week went to the vet in San
Antonio for a second opinion.  Normal and Barium xrays in hand, we visited
Dr. Gates, and for an extensive checkup and everything, he charged us a
whopping $5 (for a new bottle of antibiotics).  --for anyone in San Antonio
not visiting him, I think he's cheaper and better than anyone else for
ferret care-- He also didn't seem to think it was a tumor.  He said that her
xrays indicated a blockage and she's scheduled for surgery this week after
she gets over her enteritis.  Please keep her in your thoughts this week.
She was only a pound and a quarter going into this and she'd lost 3 oz.
when she was weighed this weekend (from vomiting and intestinal distress).
Poor thing.  Maynard misses her, but I had to leave her in S.A.  so that she
could have surgery there...to have it done here would cost twice as much and
I wouldn't feel as confident about the outcome.  She's a trooper, so I hope
it'll be okay.  I'm not ready to lose another.
 
Anybody in Texas know where I can find a black-eyed white kit?  I've looked
very hard, but it's too late in the season, I guess.  If anyone knows,
please tell me.  I might also consider an older ferret, depending on
circumstances.  Thanks!  (actually I'm trying to locate the BEW for a
relative who has an albino and wants a companion for Spike, he's a
responsible owner, but he doesn't have access to the internet).
 
On another (short) note--> anyone ever had a ferret that ate pantyhose?  We
never envisioned such a thing, but my roommate's (Cosette) has some type of
foot fetish and she doesn't just damage them, she actually EATS holes in
them.  She seems to be doing okay...we've watched closely to make sure she
didn't have a blockage, but she's forced us to become better housekeepers
(not only do we not want to have to pay for surgery to remove the hose, but
pantyhose are pretty expensive!)
