The movie you saw was probably one of the Beastmaster series, starring Marc
Singer as Dar.  He had several animal companions: a tiger, an eagle and 2
ferrets named Kodo and Podo.
 
There were 3 movies in the series, the first two (made in 1982 and 1991)
made the most use of ferrets.  There is also a TV series made to capitalize
on the Hercules/Zena popularity, but the few times I've seen it, little use

Beastmaster was directly responsible for MANY people getting involved with
ferrets, including me!  Hubby saw the movie, and suggested ferrets when
daughter Joy wanted her own pet back in 1992.  Kodo and Podo have long
been popular names for pairs of ferrets.
 
I am indebted to Beastmaster and my hubby for watching late-night movies!
