I must be missing something in this discussion.  According to their
website, HSUS has recognized ferrets as companion animals since 1998

HSUS neither supports nor opposes ferret legalization in CA (for the same
misguided reasons some ferret owners in CA oppose legalization), but did
oppose it in the past, because they considered (past tense) ferrets to be
unsuitable pets.
 
Is it possible that your information is out of date, or do you mean that
the HSUS has changed its ferret policy recently?
