Alexandra, that does indeed sound like a mink!  We definitely have them
in Massachusetts, even in fairly urban areas like Cambridge.  A friend of
mine once emailed me to ask if I knew of anyone who had lost a ferret in
the vicinity of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.  When she described
it to me and later showed me photos, there was no doubt it was a mink!
It wasn't afraid of her and her companion at all, and they spent the
afternoon watching it catch frogs (for those who might be familiar with
Mt.  Auburn, it was in fact at the Frog Pond) and eating them on the pond
shore.  Since then, I've also heard of mink living around Fresh Pond and
the Alewife wildlife reservation.  We all know how tenacious mustelids
can be--if they can make a place work for them, then they will!
