Mary,
 
Pauly had seizures before he died.  A lot of the symptoms you described
(back legs, staring into space) sounds a lot like what Pauly did.  The
vet thought it might have been something with his spleen, but eventually
whatever it was got too bad and we had to help Pauly cross the bridge.
 
I certainly hope things go better for Fruity.
