Mr Rochelle,
  We have dogs and ferrets and cats and birds etc.  Our dogs spend most
of their time outside so it isn't a problem with their food.  When they
are in the trick for the cats and ferrets is the little critter food is
up on something that the dogs don't get into.  While we leave food down
for the cat or ferret to eat as they need, the dogs when in get fed,
they eat, or it gets taken up!
