I fear that some readers might be missing the point of why Winston was taken
to the Capitol steps.  The owner was trying to change the law.
 
Remember that pets are personal property and cannot just be seized by the
DFG.  You can have your ferret put into thecare of a veterinarian.  Also
your ferret can be shipped out of state to a shelter or friend/relative.
 
If he was arrested he would have gotten the chance to fight the charge.  If
he was found not guilty or the judge dismissed the charges a precedent would
be created.  Most laws are created and all are interpreted in the court
room.  The legal status of ferrets in California could be changed with one
court case.  This man was willing to stand up against the DFG inorder to
legalize all ferrets in California.
 
Yes, it is possible his boy could have been killed but he could have also
freed the 500,00+ ferrets in CA.
