Make sure you send me a show packet! Do the foreign lines need to be 100%
or can they be mixed?

For help on starting a shelter, please feel free to contact Shelters That
Adopt & Rescue Ferrets (STAR*). If someone just wants a listing of their
state resources, clubs, shelters, vets, etc. send a SASE to: PO Box 1714,
Springfield, VA 22151-0714.

STAR* Ferrets asked about ferret adrenal cases through the shelter system
and came up with some very interesting results. About 50% of the ferrets
through shelters which responded came from Marshall Farms (two dots in right
ear - copycat tattoos are limited to one area of the country which did not
respond). Of these shelters, of the adrenals reported, 89.5% were in MF
ferrets.

===  giving own shots
I'd like to remind everyone, if you decide to give your own vaccinations,
please vaccinate during regular veterinarian office operating hours, just in
case of a reaction. If you don't feel comfortable giving distemper shots,
you won't want to be giving other meds to a reacting ferret.

===  HSUS in Florida
Feb 12, 1997: LIFE presented a seminar on ferrets in the shelter system the
first night of the Animal Care Expo. This seminar was taped by HSUS and the
recording made available to late arriving Expo participants and will be for
shelters who were unable to attend. The speakers were Dr. J. Wardell on
ferret health issues and examinations, Alicia on ferret shelter set up and
take in, and myself, Pam Grant, on shelter adoption process and screening of
adopters.

The next day LIFE and STAR* set up their booths with tons of free information
to be handed out to animal control and shelter personnel from all over the
country. STAR* passed out over 200 shelter contact listings, had a map of
the US and Canadian ferret shelter / club locations, and literature from
those shelters and clubs who sent material to be passed out. Thanks to the
Ohio groups, Florida reps, FAIR in IL, FARI in RI, and my Virginia group of
friends.

I talked with many FL people about the proposed law on ferret vaccination
and quarantine - all seemed in favor of it but most were unaware of its
existence. I stress to all Florida ferret owners to write to their vets and
local animal control groups and urge them to write to get this measure voted
into law. Only you who live there can make this happen.

Next year, the HSUS Expo will be in San Diego......
