If you feel this way you need to boycott ALL stores which sell live
animals and stop buying live animals from stores. With the exception of
the occasional local person selling animals to the petstore the vast
majority of petstore animals (ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas,
rabbits, cavies, degus, rats, mice, birds, fish, reptiles) come from
commercial breeders or "factories" as you call them. When I was
shipping a puppy there were five cardboard and wire cages in the cargo
building stacked up and each had probably a hundred hamsters in them.
The people who worked there said they get through all the time going
from breeders to stores or brokers who take then sell them to stores.
There are no stores in my area which I could shop at if I boycotted
ones which sold animals. There is one which is a bit of a drive that
sells mostly just food and treats plus some supplies. Another one in
the opposite direction is a very small shop that breeds their own birds
and small pets but still buys ferrets from Marshall's and still orders
from commercial breeders for other stuff when needed.
