i had this same issue come up when we first adopted our Augie from my
nephew in Maine and were heading home to Seattle.  Had to ship her air
freight as an 'animal'.  well, yes of course she is an animal.  As we were
standing in line ourselves to board the plane there were at least three
passengers with cardboard boxes with air holes in them labelled 'live
lobsters'.  Wanted to call in and ask when lobsters became PETS!
 
Delta airlines, BTW does allow ferrets as pets on board.
