A dog my mother had a while back had to be operated on since she had a mass
in one of her back legs.  The vet thought that it was most likely a tumor,
but the mass ended up being just one humungous fatty mass.  The mass was
big....it did grow big, relatively fast, and it made it very hard for her
to walk.  Even though ferrets and dogs are different animals, I would guess
that both can have these problems.

If you search on the web for "pesticide" and perhaps "organic" (like in
"organic food"), you'll probably come across a number of sites that have
information on the detrimental effects of certain pesticides.  While not
specifically about small animals, much of the information will have some
amount of applicability.  You may even look for information about babies
(human) and pesticides.  I know some sources are suggesting that pesticides
used for normal food crops may be harmful to infacts given their body
weight/size and how much food they consume.
 
You might also wish to search the FML archives.  This is hardly the first
time chemical issues have arisen here.
 
While there may be some valid uses, I think that dangerous chemicals are
used too causually.  I treat areas treated with chemicals as though they
are radioactive.  I wash or segregate everything that comes in contact with
those areas.  Maybe I'm a bit extreme.  But between allergies to pesticides
and fertilizers and the loathing to harm myself or my ferrets by just not
taking a few simple precautions, I don't think so.  The precautions also do
wonders for peace of mind.
