Regarding the heavy breathing ferret with insulinoma, the only thing that
comes to mind for me is cardiomyopathy--has he been checked for this?
Larger male ferrets over 3 years of age seem to be more susceptible.  Of
course, your vet would be able to tell you for sure.
 
Regarding giving ferrets tablets, what I would do is dissolve the pill in
warm water or chicken broth and then pull it up in a syringe and give it
like that.  It's hard enough to pill a cat; I cant imagine trying to give
a fuzzbutt a tablet!
