The remedy that I like (and learned about here!) is mint oil or extract.
Put some on a cotton ball and run along your baseboards, window and door
sills, anywhere the little critters get into the house.  I also run it
around the edge of ferrets' cage and their food mat in the kitchen.  At
first, I found I had to reapply every few days, but once the problem was
under control, once every 2-3 weeks was enough to keep them away.
