Assuming you're taking about the leash and not the harness, next time
there's a dog show in your area, pick up a show lead, or check the grooming
shops and better pet stores.  Skinny little things, (round, 1/4 cm diameter)
but they don't break easy.  I showed an angry/horney 55lb dog on one once.
Hope to never have to do it again<G>, but we stayed attached.
 
I purchased one of those ball closure harness/leash combos at PetValue -
works great, well constructed.  You might want to look at that as well.
Leash and harness are flat ~1cm wide nylon.
