It is nice that your building "unofficially allows small pets", but I
strongly suggest you get it in writing.  Unofficially doesn't do you a bit
of good if the manager gets angry at you, is pressured by the building
owner or some other resident, or if the building changes hands.
 
At least if you have it as an addendum to your lease, you have some hope of
fighting an order to get rid of the ferrets or be evicted, and new owners
of the building may "grandfather in" your ferrets, at least to for the
remainder of your lease.
 
I've seen that sort of thing happen before, that's why our lease has a
written provision saying "ferrets OK with cage".
