Canine distemper is 100% fatal to ferrets and can be picked up on your shoes
while walking in grass and brought home to your ferret.  You could visit a
pet shop or the vet clinic and pick it up there too.
 
GET THE SHOTS - it is such a cheap insurance policy to save a lot of
suffering.
