Sadly, yes, this was very true.
 
The tennis ball had duct tape wrapped around it to hold the ball together
with the explosives inside.  So it wasn't just an innocent looking tennis
ball.  So the caution actually was to avoid tennis balls with duct tape or
similar around them.
