Ferrets do not NEED to be caged at night.  Free roaming is just fine if
the area is ferret-proofed.  People usually cage their ferrets at night
for some combination of the following reasons:
 
* The owners themselves need a good night's sleep.
* The area cannot be completely ferret proofed.
* The owner wants to make sure ferrets can be quickly located in case of
  emergency.
* To prevent pooping all over the room(s).
