It's a common saying that ferrets are the third most popular pet, but from
the frequency with which I have to tell people what our ferrets are, it
seems unlikely that that's the case.  The best I'd say is that they're the
third most popular predatory mammalian pet.
 
In addition to the dogs and cats, you gotta figure there are a heck of a
lot more mice, hamsters and gerbils and the like out there than there are
ferrets.
