Is a ferret right for me?

I would very much like a ferret, but my parents have their doubts.  They say
that the ferret will tear up the carpet to burrow under it.  Is this true?
Are ferrets destructive?  Also I have 2 parakeets (who always stay in their
cage) and a dog (who goes crazy when he sees a squirrel).  Will the ferret
attack the birds or the bird's cage?  Will my dog attack or "play" too hard
with the ferret?
 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
