There are no domesticated Black-footed ferrets - your friends ferret is
most likely a sable, as you correctly guessed.  They are also still the
most endangered mammal in North America - so in order to own one, you would
have to have a federal permit.
 
If you want to show your friend a picture of the Black Footed Ferret, I
have some on my website - these are some that I "adopted" From the Black
Footed Ferret Recovery Implentation Team in Colorado.  Two little cuties
named Kiva and Cochise.
