Hi Alicia ~

Those of us who do not have ferret shelters are in awe of folks like
you. I cannot imagine the amount of time, care, concern, fundraising,
cleaning, PR, etc that shelters have to do. I think education to our
communities about how wonderful these fuzzies are, may start with our
shelters, as well as responsible advocacy for ferrets. I agree that
legislation needs to be passed to regulate the age of adoption or sale
of young ferrets. Plus we need to try to get some of these communicable
diseases under control. If one ferret has ADV around me, mine can get
it. So it is up to each one of us to get our ferrets to our vets and get
them covered. The shelters that I know, do an amazing job of this. But
I hear not all folks get ADV tests, or distemper etc, done. Some take
the word of the pet store that "They have had all of their shots." This
is possibly what contributes to the spread of these diseases.

Working homeopathically for the past 4 years on communicable diseases
for humans has taught me much. It starts with education, and then
prevention. So for a New Year's Resolution may I suggest becoming
affiliated with your local shelter in some way. It's a great way to
give either your time or money.

Happy New Year folks!

Warmly ~
Mary
